It all comes down to alternative to what? In my opinion it is
alternative to current common practice and maybe alternative to
current common commercial practice. By that definition tintypes and
wet plates are certainly alternative processes.

If we use alternative to current common commercial practice as the
definition , in a few years silver gelatin will be alt!
