Question on lantern slide projector

Well I bought the lantern slides I mentioned in an earlier post. The price
was right, I think/hope. They are indeed hand colored. They all have the
image identified in German and some have some additional source information
for the original photograph some of which is in English. There is other id
info in a few of them. There are around 120 of them so I have not yet
tried to list everything. If anyone is interested in that list when I get
it done, email me and I'll send you a copy.

One of the incentives for the purchase was a lantern slide projector that
came with the package. It needed a small bit of rewiring, which I've done,
and it works just fine. It is actually in great shape.

The light in it is a 500 watt Mazda base, the kind with the projecting flat
wing bayonets, GE projector lamp. P5A5 if anyone knows a source. In the
condensor lens housing there is an unoccupied third slot that seems to be
about the right size for a flat sheet of glass around 1/4 inch (6mm) thick
which leads to my question.

Is it likely that there was a sheet of heat abosorbing glass in that slot
at one time? If so does anyone know a source for this. I ran one slide in
the projector for around a minute and it got quite warm but not too hot to
handle. So for reasonably paced transitions the slides do not appear to be
in danger but if there was a heat absorber there originally I'd like to
replace it.

Thanks for your help.
