Glass rods work very well on smooth (HP) surface papers. Most papers
with more surface texture (CP) are better coated by brush. I think
the best advice is to try different methods to see what you like best.
I've
coated up to 12x20 with a glass rod. Don't expect to get it right
the first time. :-)
As for brushes, I like high quality Japanese hake brushes. 1.5-2 inch
wide for prints up to 5x7, 3 inch wide for prints up to 11x14, and 4
inch wide for larger prints. Watch for sheding hairs. For small
prints, camel hair negative dusting brushes can also be used. For
large prints, high quality house painting brushes work well. High
quality brushes will last a long time. Cheap foam brushes also work
very well and are a good way to start.
