I use Gulf Wax which comes in sticks at the supermarket (used in
canning) and usually found near the pickles. Put a cookie sheet on
top of the range and put the paper negative face down on a piece of
paper on the sheet and put over low heat. The cookie sheet heats up
and I rub the wax stick over the back of the paper negative and it
melts onto the negative. After it is coated I used a squeegee (and
old credit card will work) to scrape off the excess. I peel the paper
negative and protective sheet from each other and have a waxed paper
negative.
