Dennis - an alternative to dichromated gum is a diazo photopolymer like
ULANO RLX. I coat it on the ware directly, let it dry in the dark and
expose with a photocopier transparency or laser- or ink-jet transparency
over the top. This gives the primary image. I then coat the surface with a
slip containing coloring oxides and fire to cone 08. The slip sticks to
the clay surface only where there was no image, so it gives you the
inverse of the image. You can paint on different coloured slips to get
polychrome effects. It sounds as if Galina has gone the same route. I use
about 10% frit in my slip- this makes it hard enough to stay put where you
want it but friable enough to brush off where its not supposed to be.
