Hi all,

What is frequently referred to by alt-photo folks as Gold chloride is a
misnomer. The chemical generally used is Hydrogen tetrachlorogold, aka
Chloroauric acid or Hydrogen tetrachloroaurate. These designations may or
may not be followed by a (III) designating the valence (atomic charge) of the
Gold atom and/or by hydrate or trihydrate indicating the presence of water on
the molecule. To be sure of what you are getting, check the formula which is
HAuCl4.3H2O and the CAS (chemical abstract) no. which is 16961-25-4. This
chemical contains approx. 49% Gold.

Gold chloride, aka Gold trichloride or Gold (III) chloride contains approx.
65% Gold, has the formula AuCl3, and the CAS# 13453-07-1. It is more
expensive as it contains more Gold.

First Reaction can supply either. Stock no. 1544 for the Hydrogen
chloroaurate is $57 for 2grams, $178 for 10g, and $705 for 50g. We can also
supply stock no. 1556 Gold (III) chloride, prices upon request.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Lisa Martin
