I would assume it might not smooth any more than gelatin on paper smooths,
but would follow the texture of the substrate. My (limited) tests on
paper show that the more gelatin the more flaking (2 coats flake more than
1 coat, 1 coat flakes more than no coat) so that might possibly be a
problem...
