digital input - video

Greetings! I'm a newbie to gum, have so far tried printing from negatives
made on a 300dpi inkjet printer, and am having lots of fun. But I'm not
satisfied with this quality of neg and am ready to try another method (and
I want to express my appreciation here for the list archives with much info
on this subject).
My question involves a series of images captured from video. Is anyone else
doing this? The resolution is extremely low -- 640x480. I would like to
print out to at least 8x10 (ok, stop laughing!) I don't mind that the image
comes out soft and grainy, in fact, this is desirable. But how much can one
resample an image up in photoshop before it gets ridiculous?
Question2:
A local photo developer offers 35mm slides or negatives from disk at a
(fairly) cheap price. They told me the file size of the image should be
1772x1181 or 10x15cm at 300dpi. This sounds low to me, but since I'm
starting with such a low-res image to begin with, could I possibly make use
of this?
Anyway, I realize that I'm really the only one who can answer these
questions with experimentation, but I wanted to find out if anyone else on
the list was using the "rough and dirty" approach to digital photography
and if you could share your thoughts with me. Thanks!
