Darkroom Technician

The Chicago Albumen Works is seeking an experienced photographic technician
to operate its archival negative duplication facility. Candidates must be
conversant with densitometry and tone reproduction, have experience with
mechanized film processing equipment, and have a general interest in the
field of photograph history and conservation. The position requires
candidates be flexible, mature, attentive to detail, and concerned for the
integrity of original, historic photographic objects.

The Chicago Albumen Works is located in Western Masschusetts, in the heart
of the Berkshire Hills, home of the Tanglewood Music Festival, Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival, the Stockbridge Theater Festival, and the Great Josh
Billings Runaground (triathalon).

The Chicago Albumen Works, founded in 1976, specializes in the duplication,
restoration and printing of original nineteenth- and early
twentieth-century photographic negatives. Originally in Chicago, the
company relocated to Housatonic, Massachusetts, in 1982, where it now
occupies approximately four thousand square feet of space in a former
textile mill.

The Chicago Albumen Works offers services in six distinct areas:

-Archival duplication of original photographic negatives.

-Stripping, duplication, and reconstruction of deteriorated di-acetate
safety film negatives.

-Archival black and white copy negatives and color correctected
transparencies of lantern slides and Autochrome plates.

-Exhibition quality printing from original negatives in a variety of
vintage and contemporary printing media, and reference quality printing on
both RC and fibre base papers.

-Teaching, research and consultation in all areas concerned with
nineteenth-century photographic technique.

-Collections management, preservation surveys, and conservation program
development.

In addition, the Chicago Albumen Works is the world's sole remaining
distributor of gelatine chloride printing-out paper. Centennial P.O.P. is
manufactured in England and is distributed in the US by the Chicago Albumen
Works and in Europe through our exclusive distributor, the Nationaal
FotoRestauratie-Atelier, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The Chicago Albumen Works is a corporation organized under the laws of the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Chicago Albumen Works counts among its
regular clients some of the largest and most prestigious institutions in
the United States. It also provides service regularly to individuals and
smaller institutions. Its continued reputation derives from the fact that
it has consistently provided the highest quality duplicating, printing, and
negative conservation services.
