NEW YORK (AP) -- Andreas Feininger, a pioneering photographer
known for his richly detailed images of New York City featured in
Life magazine in the 1940s, died Thursday. He was 92.
Born in Paris and raised in Germany, Feininger moved in 1939 to
the United States where he worked as a free-lance photographer with
the Black Star Picture Agency. His clients soon included Life, and
he joined its staff in 1943. From then until he left in 1962, he
completed 346 assignments.
His renowned photographs of the New York skyline and of the
streets and sidewalks of mid-Manhattan caught in rush-hour gridlock
first appeared in the magazine, exhibiting experimental techniques
and equipment Feininger devised and perfected.
The author of more than 30 books, Feininger's private
photographs focused on the form of neutral objects, like feathers,
bones and shells.
His work has been shown throughout the country. Most recently he
chose 80 of his favorite photographs from his 60-year career for a
retrospective that has toured Europe since 1997.
