Close but not quite. The masters dealt with the critical parts like faces,
etc. They would layout the picture, perspective and all. The understudies
did the grunt work, typically clouds and drapery. There may have possibly
been some "paint by numbers" studios, but for the real masters this is the
current take on this. Problems have occured because it was standard for the
students to copy the masters work as a learning tool. Thus the multiple
pictures by Rembrandt. The Met has de-attributed a ton of Rembrandts in the
past few years feeling that they were student copies or works in the style
of."
