After reading the unfortunate letter that was sent privately to Jewelia, my impulse is to huddle in the dark--or to cry. She is wise to post it publically because it gives us all a chance to reflect on the power of hurtful words, even in the semi-anonymous world of cybermail.
The daily outpourings of encouragement, advice, wit, and yes, quirky thinking, make this a unique forum, one I look forward to joining every day. Underneath, alas, there appears to be a darker mood. Critiques not only of ideas (which are fair game and welcome), but also harsh judgments of personalities and personal styles. Angry words for those who post "inappropriate" topics (not that anyone seems sure what those are). Intolerance for those who speak a little differently. Ouch.
In the midst of the current flame war, I hope a call to civility, patience, and overall support for fellow members won't be taken amiss. I live in Philadelphia and get the other stuff here.
