Peter,

Scans are typically billed by plugging the final output size and/or final file size
through a formula. One local service bureau charges $25 for a 300DPI scan with
final dimensions of 4x5 inches. The price goes up from there. If you want a
600DPI scan, you pay a premium. Check out www.canterbury.com - this is the
particular bureau I am writing about, and their pricing structure is online.
Another bureau I've used, charges by megabyte of information scanned. So, if I
come in with a 4x5 b&w negative, and want an 8x10 scan (which works out to roughly
30 megs uncompressed at 600DPI) they charge me $35 or so. When you are talking a
16x20 at 600DPI, the price is about $85.00. Neither one of these places are
"cheap" but their quality is great.

As for the digital neg - I am not familiar with the LightJet. I suspect it is a
film-recorder device (LVT), used to expose color negatives and transparencies.
Correct me if I am wrong on that. I use an imagesetter, which is a glorified laser
printer (to simplify). An 8x10 from an imagesetter should be MUCH closer to
$20.00.

Best,
-Adam
