    Hi,

Imperfect contact between glass and negative (the glossy (base) side) causes Newton's rings, where the separation is of equal to the wavelength of light (though quite why they always appear circular I can't say). Increasing the pressure usually makes things worse, but maybe relieving the pressure slightly would cure the problem, if this could be done without losing sharpness. But isn't 5X4 film stiff enough to use without glass in the carrier? Or maybe try losing just the top glass.
