>From here it seems like just leaving the water in a bucket, if that
actually does it, would be treatment of choice. I mean the idea of using
fossil fuel to boil water for something other than a nice cup of tea
seems very UNgreenie.

We also have something called a Brita, I think they come as filters for
the faucet, but this contraption is a large pitcher you pour tap water
into that sits in the refrigerator. My husband uses it for drinking water;
I tried using it for tea, but the tea was too tasteless and I went back to
tap water. They used to sell for about $50; now you can get them around
town for about $15 -- or they were advertised at that price the moment we
bought ours at the higher price.

I don't of course know what it REALLY takes out beside the taste. But
here's an idea -- try any one or all of these methods for "dechlorinating"
and then test with some silver nitrate as per Charles's suggestion. It's
probably not practical to actually titrate chlorine level that way, but
might work to check for gross presence of chlorine...
