Bob,
Perhaps they are misunderstanding your needs, thinking that you want 300
LINES PER INCH in stead of 2400 DOTS PER INCH from the imagesetter. Think
about it, a cheap desktop laser printer does 600 DPI! If your service
bureau is making film for any press jobs better than a supermarket ad on
newsprint, they HAVE to be outputting "normal" resolutions in the 2400 or
2540 range.
Check with them again to make sure you're comparing dots to dots.
