You can watermark your work so that people can see the watermark, but they
might try to retouch it after capturing it from your site. It is better to
have a digital watermark embedded in the binary system of the file. A UK
company leads the field at the moment in this, and yes it is a big problem
for photographers with companies using images on the web without permission.
People think because its on the web its free. We have started litigation in
the USA where a company used one of our pics without permission, and it will
cost them dearly.
We make the fact that it is a criminal offence, not just a civil offence, to
infringe our copyright quite clear in our terms and conditions of entry to
our site. Have a look.
Images can be watermarked and then traced if they are used elsewhere. The
company who can provide this, at a cost, are signum technologies. They are
working with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Photographic Society
and others to give us better protection.
Look them up at www.signumtech.com
