Witho,
which trouble do you have with Arches Platine? (I suppose you are doing
platinum/palladium prints)
Cranes and Bienfang I cannot get here in Berlin either. But a paper which
works for palladium (ziatypes) is Whatman watercolour. I coat it, in
difference to Platine, with a solid amout of Tween 20, or otherwise I
sometimes get white specs (small unexposed patches on fibers) in the shadow
areas. Whatman is whiter than creamy Platine, and will give you a colder
colour. Oh yes, I remember it tends to suck up the emulsion (right through
the paper base) if the humidity becomes too low (40-45%, as it is likely in
winter). I don't remember clearly what I did then, it may be that you just
have to leave away the Tween. Otherwise, just raise the humidity level, and
coat with 55-60% RH (anyway the best for ziatypes at least).
I seem to remember that Arches Aquarelle also works, without Tween; this
and Fabriano Artistico are gelatine sized and behave somewhat different. I
have done one or two quite good prints with Artistico (also without Tween),
but it behaves different than other papers - needs longer printing times,
if i remember correctly, and if you don't coat the right way, blacks and
highlights will not be as you wish them.
