I have some troubles to connect with Photohistory list. May be my message
isn't so off topic for Photo Alt.
This book is very interesting for french speaking people.

Dear Luis
I can't help you about the microfiche copy but the thesis of François Seguy
was published one year ago by :
Presses Universitaires du Septentrion
www.septentrion.com
fax number : 0320416690
French price : 405 F (circa 60$)

The book has an entry about "Noir et Blanc" but the explanation it gives
isn't so good. The author takes an example extracted from Davanne book "La
photographie, traité théorique et pratique " (1888). Davanne speaks about BW
subject, in this case an engraving used as a model to make a photographic
copy. Engraving was BW a long time before photography and the example
doesn't work !
>From my personal point of view I think BW doesn't fit with XIX th century
because every process of this era has its own color. BW begins with DOP
silver processes, at the begining of XX th century and it ends with digital
processes
where the term "gray scale" is perhaps well adapted.
Otherwise the the book is excellent and the semantic approach of the author
is uncommon in
the field of photographic history.
Hope this help
Have a great new year
