With all due respect to Hamburg's brilliance and gifts as lecturer, permit
me to suggest that these qualities in photocurators and historians do NOT
seem to translate into a knowledge of *process,* or only in a very limited
way. That is, they may know when wet plate was supplanted by this & that,
and have a litany of hallmarks to diagnose which neg a print was made
from, but still not have a very clear idea of how any print, let alone an
offbeat one was made. (When I got Naomi Rosenblum's History of Photography
& opened to the "alternative," or whatever they called it section, I found
8 mistakes in 2 minutes in 3 pages.)

In any event, the person to answer Jim's question would be Luis Nadeau,
who would almost certainly refer you to his Encyclopedia, tho probably
give a short answer as well, while telling you he was consultant to the NY
Historical Society, et al, from [date] to [date]. In fact someone there
may still be in touch with him. However, his 2-vol. encyclopedia is a good
value and belongs in your library anyway.

If you ask your question on the history of photography list, you'll almost
certainly get an answer also. Meanwhile, Jim, I see you're a true artist,
but consider a spellcheck, or anyway, note, among other points, that
asking about "mapes" may cut down responsiveness anywhere. Sorry.

Judy
