I am surprised that your search did not turn up anything in the
archives on this. Some time ago (perhaps a couple of years) I did
some tests adding thymol to gelatin solutions and reported the
results on this list. As I recall, I started with a 20 or 30%
solution of thymol in alcohol and added this to four different
bottles of a 7-10% gelatin solution, in concentrations of 0.5, 1.0,
2.5 and 5.0ml of the thymol solution per 100ml of gelatin solution.
The 0.5 concentration preserved the gelatin solution for only about 3
weeks, the 1.0 about 2 months, the 2.5 many months, and the 5.0
concentration has preserved the gelatin solution until now. I still
have that bottle, which has been stored at room temperature, and as
best I can determine it shows no sign of going bad.
Procedure. Mix 20-30g of thymol in 100ml of alcohol. Depending on how
long you want to preserve the gelatin, add this solution in the above
proportions to the gelatin solution.
