Dichromate stain - a clue?

'ello,

I don't know gum very well, but have noticed when making negs by reversal
that if I work the stop bath to exhaustion, films acquire an irremovable
orange stain in the bleach. I don't know if the pH or carried-over
developing agents are to blame, and haven't bothered to find out, but it
does suggest that alkaline-buffered paper could be the cause. And what
about the pH of different gums?
