Thanks for the reply. On the darkening due to the acid bath, it seems to
darken the midtones. My maximum density is the same once dry.
I'm using 1/2% potassium dichromate solution. I need to run better tests
on the actual change in scale, since I could just be measuring differences
in my negatives. Exposure times are running about 35 minutes for an
average negative with 1 15W BLB tube approximately 6 inches from the
paper. (as you may deduce, I'm also making very small prints) A couple
more tubes would help that, as well as allow larger prints.
I've tried vinegar or filtered lemon juice to acidify my wash water, and
it helps it to clear but also lengthens the scale. I've been eating the
price of the distilled since (1) my water periodically leaves an
unpleasant burning feeling in the back of my throat, so I have to filter
it but wonder what else is lurking in there, and (2) I have a pomegranate
tree that despises lime-heavy water (even filtered), and needs either
distilled or rainwater. With no porch, distilled it is, so some is
always on hand.
