What I have just started is similar to adding highlight masks in the
analog building technique. One or two masks can be added to increase
the density and number of tones above certain values. This may work as
the lower tones seem to be plentiful and only the higher values are in
need of attention. This also means that the maximum amount of ink
deposited per film can be reduced offering some advantages.

Dan,
Have you or do you know of any study that has investigated the number of
distinct tones necessary for discriminating a certain range of values?
I certainly know that 10 per Zone are not enough, and my highlights, for
a single negative, have been less than that.
