CMOS sensor update

Here is an edited report from insiders about the CMOS vs CCD discussion,
which is better?, who will win?

This is a report that focuses on camera sensors. For scanners where space
and power is almost non significant they will remain CCD based until CMOS
has the same quality at a lower cost.
....
CMOS image sensor sales are growing rapidly at the expense of CCDs. In 1999,
CMOS image sensors accounted for 8% of all image sensors shipped. An
increase in demand for low cost, portable cameras over the next five years
will drive CMOS market share to exceed 50 percent. This increase will be due
to lower cost, less power consumption and higher on-chip integration in
comparison to CCD sensors.

CCDs offer higher quality images and will continue to dominate in several
high-end applications. A combination of new products and lower prices will
also help CCD technology hang on for the next few years. Due to the
significant amount of resources being devoted to developing CMOS image
sensor technology it is expected to eventually overwhelm CCD technology. As
CMOS vs CCD demand changes, North American and European companies will
capture a bigger slice of the image sensor business. Image quality
produced by CMOS technology still lags CCDs and products that require high
resolution will continue to be dominated by CCDs for the next several years.
But CMOS will eventually win out.
