Bob,

Thymol is toxic but not really, really toxic. Just handle it
carefully. Don't inhale any dust. Keep it off your skin. I can
tell you it is used by archivists to distroy mold and mildew on
papers. You put the papers in a closed box with a open dish of thymol
for a few days.

Ethanol is OK but isopropal or rubbing alcohol has something it
it that will leave an oily residue. Ethanol in a drugstore is
denatured with something, but you can buy grain alcohol (95%) in
a store that sells brandy and whiskey etc.

Of course here in West Virginia we just go out in the woods and
fire up the still. ;-) Thats a joke son....well, sort of.
