Hi Judy,

this is not the case.

As far as flatbeds are concerned, it is important to distiguish between the
machines produced for the office/business user and specialist reprographic
machines. High end repro flatbeds will manage very high optical resolution,
though sometimes only in a central "sweet" area. As these are produced for
the reprographics industry, not for the home/office user, they are priced to
suit.

For example, the Scitex EverSmart range has A4 flatbed scanners capable of
optical, not interpolated resolution up to 5600 dpi _over the whole bed_.
Even the most basic model does 2000 dpi optical over the whole bed. These
are very serious scanners. One of these would allow you to scan a whole roll
of 35mm tranny at higher res than the best low end/pro photog film scanner
_in one pass_! (Someone with more time than I can work out what the output
file size would be of a 10x8 scanned at 5600 dpi, but I think we're safely
talking "side of a barn".) Imacon, Linocolor and others are all in this
market area.

Bear in mind that you're into 5 figures and then some up in this rarified
area. You're figuring on at least 10x-20x the cost of a really serious
Home/Office scanner for the absolutely most basic level in this market.

Personally, I'd try to find a repro house that you trusted and get them to
make the seps. You'd have to be making an awful lot of seps to pay off the
scanner! And remember too, that digital has not rendered larger formats
redundant, despite the hype. If you scan a 10x8 neg at 600 dpi you still get
a hell of a file to play with!
