After some encouraging messages from Carl Weese offlist
(namely, that I'd get printable negs for silver anywhere
in the range of times I was looking at), I went back and
reread the book that he and Richard Sullivan wrote, as
well as the instruction sheet that came with the B&S
Rollo kit.
My error - I was comparing apples and oranges. The 8min
time in the book was for 1:2:75. A note is made that to
reduce levels of overall stain, to boost it to 1:2:50
and then cut the dev time by 25%.
A reread of the instruction sheet from the kit shows
20:40:1000., ie., 1:2:50. At which point the 6min time listed
on the sheet matches up just fine.
Sorry to burn everyone's time on this.
