For a really excellent book on this subject (living in pre-artist/trendy
area slums), read Zukin's book, _Landscapes of Power_.
I did (MA) research following her model on Dallas' Deep Ellum area; I
found it is the same cycle everywhere. The slums are certainly left
"abandoned" on purpose. It's another way to move $$$ around and make big
money after property taxes fall.
