I think the the (gold-, platinum-, selenium-, etc.) toning
is not the main component of the preservation of the salt
print but one of the group. At least not a miracle: perhaps
all list members saw strongly faded albumen visit cards
however nearly all pieces where gold toned.

About my experience the correct processing and
strorage/handling are more effective.

 Materials:
A good quality base material (paper) wich has a good
Photographic Activity Test (Silversafe?) and a similar
sizing material (if necessary, eg.: photo emulsion
gelatine).

 Process:
A good fixing (perhaps with two fixing bath) and a good
wash (at least: more than 20 C grade water and some tests
to controll the amount of the residual fixing material)

 Storage/Handle:
Protect the picture from the whole world:-) From the strong
light (more than 40 lux) from the whole spectrum of the UV
and IR radiation, from the several gasses of the air (in a
well sealed frame from silver protecting materials), from
high temperature and high relative humidity. Controll the
the density of the picture with densitometer (colorimeter,
spectrometer, etc) to find any destructive process in
time...

This list is absolutely not complete but perhaps pretty
horrific... Sorry, that is the life.
