Gravure is a printing process in which the ink carrying portion of the
plate is cut into the plate making little reservoirs of ink which is
transferred directly to the paper. The polymer part is a photosensitive
plastic that can create the relief necessary for that printing process. I
would assume the exposure hardens the material and unexposed areas washed
out. Kinda like the gum process.
