While there is talk of tripod heads, I'll pass along a tid-bit on
tripods. Chicago Steel Tape makes a line of tripods for surveying work,
both wood and aluminum, that are heavy duty and will rival the best, and
at about a third the price of so called "photo" tripods. Generally they
have a large hole in the top, but a large washer (fender type) can be
used to fasten the head.
