If you have the choice of scanning your black/white negatives either through
the scanner software or through Photoshop's Import option, try both and
compare the histograms. You may discover that one is superior. I get much
better black/white scans with my Linocolor Saphir Ultra through the Photoshop
Import option, even though the software interface is crude compared to
Linocolor.

The physical signal generated by the scanner has to be translated into a
numeric value. Essentially, this is how the image is replicated on your
monitor. This job is done by LUT's (Look Up Table's) embedded in the
software. Typically, the LUT's included in consumer grade scanning software
(and some professional grade software, as well) are biased for transparency
material.

It pays to try it both ways. Its easy to do and the histogram is the best way
to compare the results.
