I don't know what film you are shooting, but 12 minutes doesn't necessarily
seem long to me.
The idea of splitting pyro development into two baths works particularly well
if you are using rotary processing, where the developing solution does not
fill the tank completely and air is constantly being mixed into the solution.
An alternative, if you use rotary processing, is a nitrogen bleed system as
described in Hutching's book.
I use rotary equipment and a nitrogen system. I've found no appreciable
benefit from splitting the development into two solutions.
