Jeff,
I had the same problem. I found that the cotton cloth was the problem;
too much sizing, even with repeated washings. Try using cloth from a
good fabric store that is used for dyes. There is a brand marked that it
is an unsized cotton made for taking fabric dyes. It comes in 44 inch widths.
