The most widely used quality was (in the last decade
of the original daguerreotype age about 1850) 40.
The range was between 10 and 60 however in the
everyday practice 20, 30. 40.

(The meaning of quality hallmark eg. 40 is 1/40 th part
of silver in the mass of plate)

I think the main different is: how many times can you
reuse a plate.
