I said there was no photograph of a woman in section A of Friday's Times,
but I looked too hastily.

Page A6, under "World Briefing" has two thumbnail portraits of women.
There's Winnie Mandella, "found guilty of violating Parliament's code of
conduct."

And in the Ukraine, "President's Foe Pursued. Federal prosecutors began
an effort to strip Yulia Timoshenko [of] immunity from criminal
prosecution...

There's also a page one headline, "For Stepsisters, 2 choices on
Homelessness" which leads to pictures on page B2 showing the sisters, one
seeking welfare the other choosing different strategy for herself with
out-of-wedlock child.

This selection -- the abject and the criminal -- is essentially how women
get into the news. Other forms of abject leading to appearance include as
representations of old age and in nursing home, and as grieving wife or
mother. Less abject but still not for her own sweet self is on-the-arm-of
the powerful husband.
