My own opinion is that traditional kallitype using one of the black
tone developers (sodium acetate for example) would be a much better
process for proofing for pt/pd than argyrotype since the latter is
POP. More time consuming of course but the results would more
closely match those of pt/pd in contrast and tonal scale. Vandyke
would be much simpler than argyrotype and easier to use with
different papers. But it too is POP.
Regarding the question of Dmax, yes, it is possible to increase Dmax
of Argyroptypes with double coating *with some papers and or with the
correct addition of Tween to the sensitizer." The thing about
Argyrotype is that it is very paper sensitive and if you don't use
the right paper and/or amount of Tween you will lose a lot of density
during wet processing.
