My initial reaction is that that would be a reproduction, yet, I own a
piece by Seattle artist Mark Sullo, which is a very heavily worked collage
that has been scanned and printed digitally. The digital printing melts
the colors together a bit and removes the built-up quality whose praises
Carl sings. I believe it is a unique piece and I also believe that Mark
views the actual collage as a preparatory stage and not a unique
finished work.

Perhaps it is a question of the artists intention.

I would also suggest that in most other cases, photographing/scanning
and reprinting alone does not qualify as montage unless the resulting
digital images are further manipulated.
