Sandy,

I think it may be that with the Epson pigment inks in the 2000p, there was
sort of a trade off of the metamerism for the life of the inks. Since they
probably are trying to retain the archival nature, their work around sounds
like they are using the black and gray to tone down the metamerism, since the
metamerism has been explained as being partially due to trying to extend the
black ink down into the medium tones... by using a gray ink there and less
CMY inks, they thus reduce the metamerism...

This is all speculation regarding this new printer, there is very little out
on it yet in English.

There are a couple of other interesting aspects of this printer. Two
different interchangeable black cartridges ... one for glossy paper and one
for matte paper.

The other interesting aspect is the use of the Black and Gray inks for black
and white printing... a duo tone approach to black and white ... not quad
blacks yet, but at least a step in the right direction for people wanting
something approaching piezography.

I wonder why another color was needed to cure the metamerism problem.
This would appear to be more a question of pigment type than the
number of colors used. The folks who sell the MIS and Micro-Bright
pigments for the CIS system insist that metamerism is almost
completely eliminated with these ink set with the 2000P. And
interestingly metamerism is almost non-existent with the 4-color
pigments of my Epson C80 printer.
