As others have pointed out you can find instructions for adapting a 
spotmeter for densitometer use in Davis' Beyond the Zone System and 
Tom Ferguson's web site is also interesting.

 From my perspective, however, it hardly seems worth the effort to 
make the adaptation given the very low prices that densitometers are 
going for on ebay these days. I have seen many late model color 
reflection/transmission densitometers sell for less than $200, and 
transmission models from the late 70s and early 80s typically go for 
less than $100. Just a couple of weeks back I bought an X-RITE 810 
model, which is still in the X-RITE product line at $3200, for only 
$180, and in perfect working condition.

It appears that digital photography has put out of business hundreds 
of small wet processing businesses that were the major use of this 
type of equipment.
