Re: POP gold toning was Re: To: alt-photo-process-l@sask.usask.ca
When I first started working with toners with POP, salted paper and
kallitype I wasted a lot of money by mixing liter batches of the
toner. Most formulas worked great on the first print or two, but
sporadically afterwards, especially if any time elapsed.
Eventually I settled on a very simple toner that has worked well for
me, with both gold and platinum toning, with POP, salted paper and
kallitype, *when used before fixing*. It is made by mixing 5g of
citric acid in one liter of water, with either 25ml of 1% gold
chloride or 5ml of the B&S Potassium chloroplatinate #3 solution.
However, even this formula exhausted quickly until I started to mix
just enough to tone a print, using a one-shot approach. The amount
you will need will vary according to process but what I have found
is that about 200ml of solution is more than enough to fully tone a
12X20 print with salted paper and kallitype. Full toning is achieved
in about 3-4 minutes. Mix less for smaller prints. A POP will tone
with the same amount but it take much longer, 5-10 minutes.
To tone, use a flat bottom tray and agitate constantly for the entire
period of toning.
