Sudek may very well have made carbon prints. However, the sixty
prints that are illustrated in the book Joseph Sudek Pigment Prints,
published 1998 by the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries in New York, are
described in one of the accompanying essays as prints made by
combining silver prints with carbon tissue, which is of course the
carbro process.
It is of course virtually impossible to tell a carbon print from a
carbro print since they both consist ultimately of pigmented gelatin,
but there are clues. First, carbro as a process is much more likely
to frill than carbon and quite a number of plates in the O'Reilly
book indicate that there was frilling on the original print. Second,
there is a distinctive difference in the spread of tonal values
between carbon and carbro print due to the nature of the curves.
Carbon is a process that has a long, straight line curve while the
carbro process has an S curve like very similar to the silver prints
from which they are made. In looking at the prints in the O'Reilly
book my impression is that the tonal values are more typical of
carbros made from silver prints than of carbon, though this
impression is complicated by the fact that virtually all of the
prints appear to have been made from fairly old, and therefore
fogged, carbon tissue.
