Since the subject has been breached--

from Wilson's Photographic; April 1898; pg.159-

Chloride of Aluminum.................... 80 grains
Bicarbonate of Soda...................... 360 grains
water ............................................ 48 oz.

'When mixed, this will form a flocky hydrate, which will settle to the bottom.Decant the
clear liquid.
To prepare a toning bath take of the above solution twelve ounces and add a grain or two
of gold-- the gold solution must be neutralized with bicarbonate of soda before adding it
to the twelve ounces of stock. A trifle more gold may be add if the bath tones too
slow. This bath is by Mr. Clemons, a veteran maker of salted paper, who recommends a "short
stop" to arrest toning after the prints are done, composed of one ounce of salt to the
gallon of water, the prints to be thrown directly into it when toned and before fixing,
the latter being of the usual proportions of hypo and water."

Note: in the article, the author says it take 25 minutes for the toning to complete-
".....but when finished it was every bit the equal of a perfect platinum."
