The answer is, maybe. I wouldn't use the standard laser printer
halftone screen; you'll probably get dots on your print. But using a
stochastic bitmap file, following Dan Burkholder's instructions for
preparing files for the imagesetter, I made very nice tricolor gums from
laser printer negatives for several years while waiting for epson to
develop their photo-quality printers.

But it also depends on the printer. Some laser printers just won't do
the heavy blacks without banding, and some (mine, for example) started
out fine but later developed banding that couldn't be fixed. So it's a
gamble, but if you've already got the printer, you don't have much to
lose trying it.

I don't have a website, so I use Bostick & Sullivan for my website when
I want to show an image for discussion or instruction purposes (thanks,
Dick!). There is a tricolor gum print on the B&S forum that was made
from stochastic negatives from a 600 dpi laser printer; it's under
Coffee House, the topic is something like "inkjets, spectral density and
gum," and the post is dated 7/6/02.
