In my experience, nothing increases D-max as much as double coating -- on
those papers that respond to double coating. You can add whatever, turn
yourself inside out. make burnt offerings, make unburnt offerings, etc.
But for both cyano and VDB, try double coating. As far as keeping the
emulsion "on the surface" with addition of gum, I think that hurts more
than it helps -- aside from strangifying the print, it dilutes the
emulsion. Platinum does respond to being kept on the surface, heat drying
after X seconds or minutes (depending on the paper) does that. VDB not.
