You'll find some subtle, provocative and knowing answers to these
questions in a recent book, "The Antiquarian Avant-Garde, the New wave in
Old Process Photography," by Lyle Rexer (Abrams). It's also illustrated
with well-printed examples of the processes, from daguerreotype & calotype
to gum. Predicting the future is of course futile, but.... see what you
think about your last two questions when you're looked at the pictures.
Meanwhile, I must ask you the same questions...

How does "silver gelatin" enhance your pictures?

Do you see a future for silver gelatin?
