I just had a realization this weekend. A red pigment, Alizarin Crimson Lake
Extra made by Holland something or other, has always printed badly in my
gums. Too contrasty. No detail in the shadows. The midtones get all
splotchy and weird. I always assumed I was just printing it badly, too much
exposure, or a bad negative. I looked at the bottle yesterday and it said
"oilpaint" on the label and another part of the label had mention of
"linseed oil". It is a powdered pigment that I got at Pearl Paint from the
same section as all the other powdered pigments I get that work fine. Is
this really an oil paint, not suitable for gumming? Or do I just have to
figure out how to print it right?
