Hi:
This is for the digitally adventurous. I don't know if any of this is
practical yet.
I was reading about a new digital image format, openEXR that might be
useful to people doing demanding digital work.
openEXR was developed by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) as a format that
supports a very high dynamic range. ILM says openEXR will support a range
of 30 stops without loss of precision.
Image banding or posterization is caused by loss of precision.
ILM released openEXR as an open standard.
A photoshop plugin was recently released for it.
More info here:
http://www.openexr.com/
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/openexr/
photohop plugin here:

(at the bottom of the page)
openEXR is supposed to be supported in cinepaint
(http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net) a free image editing
program - but its not in the current windows version I tried
