Hi:
I played around with cinepaint - the image editor that can handle openEXR
file formats. The latest version can work with a number of high bit
formats.
The most significant thing about cinepaint is that it is a 16bit image
editor. It was designed specifically to work with a richer color
definition than 8 bit programs like photoshop and GIMP. Cinepaint is
based on GIMP.
It may offer a solution to the problems people have with color-banding due
to using 8bit images.
Its not ready for primetime yet - but it shows promise.
What it can't do yet it print or scan - but they are working on it, The
only way to print an image from cinepaint at this time is with a
high-resolution film recorder.
They plan on creating a 16bit printing system using the gimpprint print
drivers. http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ This is expected to be
complete at the end of 2003. gimpprint supports most printers.
Cinepaint will hopefully offer a 16 bit image editor that can send a 16
bit image to almost any priner
cinepaint is an opensource program - anyone can download it for free. It
has version for (os x) Windows, and Unix.

I'll keep my eye on it.
Gord
